Today Tony turns… another year older! (I will leave it to him to share the not at all old number that he is turning, should he care to!) To celebrate, we have orchestrated a weekend of extravagant proportions. We started celebrating early last night by heading out to see a double header of Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D at the Theater that Time Forgot (seriously, we were the ONLY people there… I get that it was a Thursday, but come on!). We’d both seen the two movies before, but never in 3D, and having the theater all to ourselves meant we could do running commentary, which was actually a lot of fun. We also got to see the trailer for Toy Story 3, and, well… I hope it is better than what was shown! In my mind, Toy Story 2 is a lovely way to cap off the franchise and completes the full story arc that the movies aim to tell, but I will try to have faith in Pixar and assume they know what they’re doing. But here’s the thing: remember in Toy Story 2 when Jessie is sharing her story (via the montage accompanied by Sarah McLaughlan warbling When Somebody Loved Me) about her time with her previous owner Emily and it was SO SAD? (As in, every time I see that scene, I possibly tear up!) And the whole point there is that kids grow up and leave for college and their old toys get left behind and given away and that is sad? But then Jessie gets saved because Andy always can do with new toys, and then we are happy! But now in Toy Story 3, Andy is leaving for college and so the toys are given away to a day care! Is this the story we really want to see? OK, and even if that premise isn’t somehow sad (I guess the upside is the toys are now making other children happy…), the jokes in the trailer are just not very funny, and that is a shame because generally speaking the Toy Story flicks are both heartwarming AND amusing. The Force Unleashed was touted as a game that would vastly change how video games are played, all based on the power of the PS3 (and Xbox 360, but that’s an even more stupid name than Playstation, so it is therefore invalid). The initial press certainly made this game seem revolutionary and like it would be the shot in the arm that the action genre on the PS3 needed. When it was finally released it found a luke-warm (see what I did there? Luke… Skywalker. Yeah?) reception and I think overall this was justifiable.
What happened to us? I know that the prince and I have had our ups and downs over the years, but I still believed. He wasn’t good about returning calls and was always late for everything and what do yellow roses mean, anyway? But this, blatantly phoned-in, latest effort has me thinking that not even counseling can save us.
Ahem. I recently finished playing the latest installment of the Prince of Persia franchise, and since this game was released more than three months ago I’ll dispense with any pretense about this being a timely review or anything like that. Instead, I’ll create some talking points and assume that anyone who is interested in this game has already played it. I’ll also show my cards early in the game: I think that Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Within is one of the best games ever made. Ever. This latest installment continued what I consider a downward spiral of what could have been an excellent, potentially unmatched, franchise.
First, the good. Then the bad. Then the why.
We subscribe to Gamefly, which, much like Netflix and movies, allows us to be a little more adventurous (perhaps less selective?) with our gaming choices. That’s why, despite the mountain of poor and neutral reviews that this game received, we decided to go for it anyway.
The Battle for Assgrab (as Steph likes to call it) is essentially about a Viking who gets into Freya’s, the Goddess of fur coats (apparently), good graces and gets some nifty powers as her new pet. You fight the evil Horde of Hel, the Goddess of the underworld, and pretty much slash and burn like a good little Viking when and where Freya says so. Your biggest tasks are releasing Viking clans from the Horde’s grasp and summoning dragons to help you and the freed Vikings reclaim your old territory from the Horde. In a lot of (conceptual) ways this game reminds me of Assassin’s Creed, though is much less pretty, polished and engaging. The story is there, certainly, but there isn’t much to motivate you to put on your give-a-crap hat.
Let me first say that this game is by no means the best, or really even close to the best, game we have played on the PS3, but it’s one of the few I’ve had the determination to finish in a while, so it gets a review. I’ll start with what the game does not do well and finish on a more positive note, because that makes me happiest right now.
Steph and I recently finished with this game (note how I didn’t simply say finished) and we had a few thoughts regarding game-play and such. Overall it’s a fairly playable game, a little light on story but easy enough to get into once you get the swing of things. There are some quirks I don’t particularly care for, but overall it was reasonably playable.
