Shocking to see a new installment of What We Watched up so soon, but we watched a freakish amount of movies in the past week and, for better or for worse, we just had to blab about them. Featured this time:
  • Tony reveals a crush while we talk about The Girl in the Cafe... and it's not on a girl!
  • Yes, Fantastic Mr. Fox is pretty fantastic!
  • Generally time-lapse photography is meant to speed things up, but we talk about how it seems to slow things down in Chronos
  • Michael Douglas may be the King of California, but he's also pretty creepy... and maybe that's a good thing?
  • Steph insults Asians everywhere (and Tony) while discussing facial hair and Infernal Affairs
  • We rag on Gwyneth Paltrow so bad while talking about Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow that she may have to whine on Goop about us
Added bonus: despite talking about two more films than we usually do, we still manage to do it in the same amount of time as our other podcasts!  Brevity is clearly the soul of wit!

I'm just gonna call it now: best movie of 2009

I'm just gonna call it now: best movie of 2009

How’s this for a short review: if you haven’t seen this movie, go and see it.  Now!  The end. Ok, did you do as I said?  No?  You need a little bit more incentive?  But it’s a PIXAR movie.  Those things are pretty much guaranteed to be cinematic gold (with the exception of Cars… what was up with that one?  I never saw it and quite honestly have no interest to ever do so.  Oh, also, I’ve never seen A Bug’s Life, but I consider that an oversight on my part and I’m going to go put on my Netflix queue right now…).  I didn’t even really know what Up was about for the most part going into it (my synopsis pre-watching Up: it’s about a crotchety old man who makes his house fly using balloons), and yet based on the fact that it was Pixar, I knew we had to go see it.  The 98% fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes didn’t hurt either. [By the way, my post-watching synopsis?  It’s about a crotchety old man who makes his house fly using balloons and is AWESOME.] (more…)

Doesn't this look like it's a creepy movie rather than cheery?

Doesn't this look like it's a creepy movie rather than cheery?

This weekend Tony & I went to see Coraline in 3D.  We hardly ever go out to see movies, since we have a Netflix account which means that movies come to us instead, but I figured that that extra third dimension might add something pretty cool to the movie-watching experience, so we got off our lazy butts and ventured out to the theater. [As an aside, I will mention that we did head out about 2 weeks ago to go see Slumdog Millionaire, but traffic was a beast near the mall AND then when we got there the theater was a complete zoo for reasons we could not understand.  Literally people were lining up outside of the theater in order to buy tickets.  But to what film?  Surely all those people couldn’t have been that into He’s Just Not That Into You, right?  Anyway, we stood in line for the automated box office for about 15 minutes, eating all of our blueberry yogurt covered raisins meant for the film in the process, after which point we still hadn’t purchased tickets and decided that we would just go home.  So essentially, we went to the movie theater and ate a box of candy but saw no movie.  Awesome.  Also, we have still not seen Slumdog, but I guess given that it just won the Oscar, we probably will now.] (more…)
