On this installment of What We Watched:
  • Much to Steph's chagrin, all the puns in the world aren't enough to make Running Man a good movie
  • I Heart Huckabees? More like I ZZZZ Huckabees...
  • Our discussion of Rosemary's Baby devolves into what makes a movie scary... Also, Tony tells you all the ways in which you are stupid
  • We get passionate about education and inner-city school kids (who knew?!) while discussing the documentary Pressure Cooker

That’s so funny about I ZZZZ Huckabees!

In Rosemary’s Baby (which I loved, in spite of all its faults!), I’m wondering if you know the background story about the haircut. She cut it in real life when she hooked up with Frank Sinatra, so they had to write it into the movie.

Also, all this ignorance on Rosemary’s part – this was the sixties!

And I would also have to say, I would not eat raw meat and chicken gizzards even if I were NOT pregnant with Satan’s baby….

I agree with you Steph – The Shining is TOTALLY scary!

@ Jill: Thanks for all the tidbits on Rosemary’s Baby! I actually really enjoyed the film a lot, even including the haircut! 😉 And I’m so glad you also think The Shining is scary! It is!

The Rosemary’s Baby discussion has to be one of my all-time favorites. I’m with Steph AND Tony – The Shining is totally creepy because it seriously could happen. And even though the events of The Ring are totally impossible, that is the scariest movie of all time. Whether or not creepy little dead monster girls can really come out of your TV and destroy you, that’s one scary freaking image. Well done, guys.

Tony: Shows how much I know
    Step: Yep

Pretty much set the tone for the podcast. 😉

Maybe you were confusing Running Man with the Island of Dr. Moreau? I think that’s the first story where rich men hunted people . . .

p.s. Tony, you’re right, The Shining is not scary — it’s freaking terrifying. I am also alarmed by your lack of sympathy for van-driving free spirits.

p.p.s. other people who die in movies? The people who think they are immune to the threat. 😉

p.p.p.s. puns should always be intended.

@girls: not to go all über manly on you, but I defy you to find a man who thinks The Shining is legitimately scary. I feel like being scared of The Shining is like being scared of the news. Maybe I’m being harsh, but there you have it. So, in summary, show me a man who is scared of The Shining and I will show you a puss. Girls, you get a pass for being scared by it because of its decidedly misogynistic overtones — this really is a movie that is meant to show what is probably the worst possible situation for a woman to be in ever. Being a blustery male I can sit back and say “well, I’d just peg him real good with the bat and be done with it.” See?

Also, Trisha, this is the south. Van-driving free spirits have no truck here. See, there’s a pun for you, too.

Never seen Running Man though my husband says I should. They showed it in my film class in high school, but I don’t think I was there for that. It does indeed sound a little cheesy, so I think this is a no-go for me. I Heart Huckabees sounds like a hot mess. I hadn’t heard much about it, but have seen it on the shelves and wondered about it. Now I won’t have to wonder anymore! I have never seen Rosemary’s Baby, but I have always wanted to! It does sound like it has a lot of exposition, which I totally wouldn’t expect for a horror movie. It does sound like there were some pretty creepy things about it, devil-baby plot aside. It sounds like a really fun movie (though probably not all that scary) and it goes into the queue right now!! I also think The Shining is scary, and I now realize that I need to watch it again. I had not heard of Pressure Cooker, but it sounds interesting to me.

Touché on both accounts, Tony. Touché. 😉

Ha! We zzzzzzz Huckabees as well. 🙂

@ Priscilla: Glad to hear we weren’t alone in are ambivalence towards that one!
